Category B is restricted to 40 nautical miles out to sea in South Africa, for non-commercial vessels. The entry requirements for the course are:
You need to be 16 years or older
2 copies of your Identity Document
4 ID photos
Medical Certificate
Eye sight test
25 hours of logged sea time plus a theoretical lecture or 50 hours of sea service certified by a qualified skipper
Theoretical exam
Practical test
The course covers the syllabus set out by SAMSA. It covers chartwork, power, law, meteorology, emergency procedure, manoeuvring, handling and first aid.
