Category C is restricted to 15nm out to sea. This is the most common course for sea going vessels! The course details are as follows:
Category C - 15nm Skippers Course Information
The Course
The course consists of 16 hours of lectures and a 3 hour exam. We cover the following:-
Compass work
Emergency procedures
Boat handling
Engines
Law
First aid
Weather
Seamanship
25 Hours of sea time
12 Practical launches
The pass mark for each section is 60%, aside of first aid which has a pass mark of 50%. (If you have a current first aid certificate you will be exempt from writing that section.)
The Trainers
Graeme Saville has been a skipper for over 20 Years. He has represented SADSAA for fishing and skippering and he has been an examiner for just as long. He has been responsible for training some of the best skippers around. Graeme (Strawberry) will be invigilating your the exam and checking up on all of us.
Clifford Saville (Lemon) will be doing the lectures and practical training. He has a many hours of sea experience and has a passion for surf launching. Other than that, he is a chip off the old block.
The Venue
The Category C course is held at 8 Palm Road, Pennington, KZN South Coast. Bookings are made by us on receipt of deposit.
The lectures will be done every afternoon and they last at least 4 hours per day.
The Practical Training
Our boat is a 5.4 semi rigid with 2x50 hip Yamaha motors which are equipped with trim and tilt. We will launch from the Pennington Ski Boat Club each day and we will practice surf launching and driving vessels out at sea. We will show you emergency procedures, general seamanship and radio procedures out at sea.
The weather plays a major role in ski boating and we can’t guarantee launches every day.
The Results
Your exam will be marked as soon as possible and upon passing you will receive a temporary skipper’s ticket, subject to receipt of the relevant accompanying documentation.

A 50% deposit is required to secure your booking. Please email or fax the proof of payment. Final payment is required before we start the course.
The Requirements
Medical form - please get this filled out by your doctor or clinic and have it stamped.
Eyesight form - please have an eye sight test done and get the form stamped. Specsavers charge R52.
Log sheet - please fill out your personal details.
Photocopy of your ID document.
4 ID photos (colour).
There is a local doctor in Pennington if you require any of your documents filled out by him (he does charge).
The Certificate
A temporary certificate will be issued every six months, after receipt of the requirements listed above, while your permanent ticket is been processed.

The Details
The lecturer and the examiner cannot teach and examine the same class. The exam is a closed book exam. This course is not about grammar and spelling, but rather a chance for us to show you the basics about boating. The more time you spend on the water, the more you will see how the basics fall into place. You won’t know everything about skippering once you have your ticket but you will have learnt about the dangers and how to deal with them and set a mild stone for the future.
